This is a great intro to the TEAM approach and especially to the topic of resistance! I find it encouraging that this topic is presented at the outset because it seems to be so important to the progress of the patient as well as to the professional satisfaction of the therapist. Maybe sometimes the best way to help is to not try to help so much! I’m looking forward to learning more about this topic. I would love to see some demonstrations of how to deal with resistance sometime.
Thanks, Chris. I a week or so I will be posting a great interview article on my website on how to deal with resistance. It will make things a lot clearer for you, I think. We’ll likely have more podcasts, too, on this topic. Right now, Fabrice and i are catching up on moving to iTunes and posting our first 20 recorded podcasts. david
Dear Dr. Burns,
Though I emailed before, I’m all too aware of how many thousands (at least!) you have, so I’ll make this brief.
Having ‘endured’ around 60 years of therapies and counselling which haven’t really helped me (likely my fault, but still!), can you recommend any TEAM CBT therapists in the UK? As a fervent fan of your podcasts, I’m sure that, even in the final years of life, they or he/she/it! could help me.
Keep up your great work,
Best,
John
Hi John, Thank you! I do not have referral lists, since I work alone and do not have the resources for that, but you might check with FGI (feelinggoodinstitute.com). I have tons of free podcasts on the interpersonal model, and you can also read my book, Feeling Good Together if you do the written exercises while reading. If you use the search button on my website, you can type in things like “Five Secrets” or “relationship problems” or some such thing and you’ll get tons of helpful links. Will include your question with only your first name on an Ask David, as lots of folks might have questions about how to get help on marital problems.
All the best, david
David
Thank you so much for sharing, and being so generous with all you have learned and developed. I look forward to learning more!
Thanks for your kind comments. Hope you enjoy the podcasts. Great to have you on board! david
First time listening. Suffer with anxiety due to multiple things. Thank you for caring about those of us who fell lost
Thanks, Glenda. The book, When Panic Attacks, may be helpful to you also! See my books page on the website, feelinggood.com. david
Thanks David, I’ve been using your approach to navigate my perfectionist tendencies and also applying it to help so many people during the last 20 years. And here I have the opportunity to say THANK YOU. You’ve helped me made my life better.
Thanks, Guillermo. If you sign up on my website, feelinggood.com, you’ll find a search function, and you can type in “perfectionism” and find all kinds of resources, pdcasts, Facebook live TV, etc. All the best, david
Hello Dr Burns
I am a pediatrician and the overwhelming amount of kids who suffer low self esteem and depression is increasing all the time, what would you recommend I do to help them maybe in group therapy as we have a shortage of providers. How can I create small and impactful message that can help the kids? Thanks a lot.
Suzanne
Thanks, depending on their ages, you might want to use or modify my ten week group: Ten Days to Self-Esteem that you can purchase on Amazon. That is the manual for people in the group. You can also purchase Ten Days to Self-Esteem: The Leader’s Manual as an ebook on Amazon. A lot CAN be done in a group! All the best, david
I just ordered your book and am writing daily my cognitive distortions. I ran into one I did not know how to label it.
I am a 73 year old, attractive woman, When I see a young beautiful women having a great time, say in an ad, I feel angry, sad and jealous. This does not apply to family members only strangers.
Cognitive distortions only apply to negative thoughts that trigger negative feelings. Statements of feelings do not contain cognitive distortions. david
Dr. Burns, I was giving your feeling good book, which has really helped. I also enjoy listening to your podcasts. I currently have severe health anxiety/illness anxiety with catstrosizing cognition distortion. The podcasts helped. Trying to figure out which might be best cbt technique to implement.
Hi Paul, thanks for the email! My book, When Panic Attacks, might be especially helpful, including the chapter on the Hidden Emotion Technique. I’m getting the search function fixed right now on my website, but search for hidden emotion model might also help. There is, by the way, a free anxiety class on my website. d
Hi Paul, in addition to the previous information, Chapter 3 of When Panic Attacks shows you how to create a Daily Mood Log, step by step. d
I was diagnosed with anxiety and panic disorder. And find that I know cry for no reason. I do have medication but I am trying to do this all organic and by reading your book I hope it can find me ways to help myself. I also pray because I know that with God’s help I can do it.
Thanks, and good luck. There is a free anxiety class on my website, and my book, When Panic Attacks, may help you, too! All the best, david
Hi David
Can you please tell me where to find your free Anxiety class on your web page? I cannot find it.
Thank you!
Best wishes.
Caroline
i’M PRETTY sure that you just take the anxiety test on the home page. Let me know if that works for you! d
Thanks David it did work! I have got the first lesson of the Anxiety class in my inbox already!
Greetings
Caroline
Great! Let me know if the lessons are useful! d
Hello Dr. Burns, I was wondering if there was a specific date/year you consider the T.E.A.M model to have been born. Any info would be great, thanks for all the work you do!
There’s a podcast on that, but it was many small events and discoveries from data analysis that allowed CBT to morph and evolve into TEAM. Thanks, David
i read your books and i beleive in the power in your methoods . i think that teamwork is important here too. i mean to say to have freinds that we can talk about these methoods . i am happy to communicate with you .
Thanks, Deutch! david
I wasn’t able to play the podcast, unfortunately. I also couldn;t find it on Amazon Music.
Check the podcast tab on my website. d
Hi Dr. Burns, I picked up a copy of ‘Feeling Great’ and am excited to start reading it. I have been battling anxiety, depression, and severe chronic insomnia for the past year. Do I start with TEAM-CBT for anxiety/depression and deal with that first, or do I supplement with CBTi-for Insomnia and do both at the same time? I met with Mayo Clinic last fall and they said the root cause of the Insomnia is some depression. I have been to a lot of doctors, specialists, and therapists and so far no one has been able to help. Thank you!
I am not familiar with the insomnia app but it can likely give you some of the basics of sleep hygiene in case you do not already know them. TEAM can be helpful, to say the least, for the mood or relationship issues that may be triggering the troubles sleeping. Often we may have trouble sleeping because we are upset about something. Sleep difficulties are a non-specific manifestation of being upset about something. There is no special relationship with depression, however. It could be anxiety, anger, anything. Let me know what evolves for you! And, of course, sleep difficulties do not always result from emotional disturbance, but this is often the case. For humans, problems don’t usually just come from out of the blue, but from your life! d
Hi David, You talk about people resisting the therapist but sometimes they do it for good reason.I had a therapist that talked about children fighting in their heads and all kinds of psychotic ideas. Of course I resisted her as she was nearly insane. I then found a Psychiatrist that was sane and talked like a normal person who didn’t get into all these unfounded and unecessary psychology ideas. Guest what, I recovered. So I don’t always agree with your belief that the client is resisting for no good reason
Odd you would say this, since I teach (forcefully, in fact) that people resist for GOOD reasons. You will need to explain your thinking a bit more, as your conclusions about wehat I teach are very puzzling to me! d
I am a New comer. Thank You very much for this series. I juts suggest If video with slide is possible then it will be better to understand more.
Thanks, sent it to Fabrice! Warmly, david
I find your method of treating patients with depression interesting. I am 80 years old and have been fighting anxiety and depression all of my life. However, depression has caused me to have almost no ability to concentrate or interest in anything. I wonder how a person finds the internal negative feelings and thoughts which cause depression. Can you tell me how a person does find these negatives.
On my website, you’ll find many books I’ve written that answer your quwtion, many free classes, many free podcasts, and more, all focused on your question. Check those references first, and then feel free to ask any questions you may have. Best of luck, Warmly, david
Dr Burns,
I thank you so much for taking the time to work with people like me who depressed and feel hopelessness. You have done and is going a great job.
Sadly, we have no funding or budget, as all is volunteer work. If someone offered funding we could do something like that perhaps. The weekly show notes are usually very extensive, and might help! Always wish we could do more, but keeping things fairly humble. Warmly, david
Dr.Burns, can you also hzve transcripts available gor the hearing impaired? Thank you
Dr. Burns,
I am a newcomer, and I really like the topic of resistance with clients. I just received a copy of your new book, and I am looking forward to learning the techniques.
Linda Smart-Sullivan, LCSW-C
Thanks, Linda. Remember, too, that I offer free unlimited training for therapists at my Tuesday Stanford trianing gorup, which is now virtual and open to mental health professionals worldwide. Best, david
Dr. Burns,
I thought briefly where to put my comment about my mental health journey and decided podcast #1 is the right place.
After several episodes of depression and mania in my life the most recent major depression period started to manifest itself 4 weeks ago. After being unsuccessful to find a new Psychiatrist quickly (my precious retired on me unexpectedly) a friend of mine pointed me to Feeling Good. Through a lucky mistake I immediately bought Feeling Great.
500 pages and one week later my depression is gone. Total self study. Blown away by the effectiveness of TEAM. Also hearing your calm and humorous voice in many podcast accelerated the process of healing.
I am now doing an outpatient group therapy to learn more about myself. I have also reached out to the Feeling Good Institute and found the first 15 minute interaction today extremely easy because of the common terminology. My goal with them is relapse prevention training.
I am eternally grateful to my friend pointing me to your book and of course to you and your life accomplishment helping patients like me.
Johannes
Hi Johannes, Bless your heart and thank you for your kind comments! Warmly, david
Dr Burns
The journey begins.
I have been reading self help books and going to seminars for over 50 years; but after another ‘failed relationship’ I realize that what I am doing isn’t working I wondered where to turn when I discovered you – I believe in synchronicity (the teacher appears). I am aware that I need to put in more effort than I have previously, but I am looking forward to diving deeper into resistance and TEAM. I have a bit of an understanding of motivation, and believe there are times I have been motivated to behave a certain way to compensate for something that I lack.
I have listened to a few of your podcasts, including the one with Tom Bilyeu – I chuckled when you said your 78th birthday was imminent because I will be 79 in two days – I use my birthday as a day of contemplation and bought Feeling Good to give me direction and motivation.
Until I heard these podcasts I had no idea that I struggled with depression and anxiety, although I was very aware of bouts of low or no self-esteem. There were childhood events/traumas and I told my story as an attempt to gain pity – it’s time to give up my story. I know I will not change overnight, and sometimes it will be difficult but I feel that I have hope. I taught massage therapy for 15 years and loved it; I hope that this will also be a labor of love.
Part of me is very anxious about walking into the unknown, I have no idea where it will lead me. I just have to continually remember that there is hope and it is time to do something different.
Thank you for being a light in the darkness.
Roy
Roy, thank you so much for your kind comment. It means a lot to me. You might want to consider the Feeling Good App as well. We’re doing beta tests all the time (totally free) and should have the first version of the app available for purchase (inexpensive and free to any who cannot afford it) available in the fall. It will likely incorporate AI and will hopefully be another helpful tool.
I like all the things you’re saying above.
Warmly, David
