Many therapists say they practice cognitive therapy—but what they deliver may not be the real thing. Why?

True cognitive therapy, especially TEAM CBT, is far more demanding than most people realize. It’s not a quick fix, and it’s not something you can just claim on a website. It takes years of rigorous training, humility, and a commitment to mastering powerful tools for change. Therapists who genuinely learn these skills can often help people improve rapidly.

But some therapists like to advertise that they have expertise in all the latest fads–simply as a way of attracting clients, who have no way to evaluate the integrity or skill of the therapist. Of course, there are many skillful and compassionate therapists out there, and I want to sing their praises at the same time I call out those who might be inadvertently misleading the general public.
