In this first “Ask David” Podcast, Dr. Burns responds to three questions submitted by listeners or visitors to his website, www.feelinggood.com:
- What causes an “identity crisis?” And how do you treat it? You will discover that the answer takes you in an unexpected direction!
- Why is it so hard to find a therapist trained in cognitive therapy, as well as the newer T.E.A.M. techniques? When I go to therapists who claim to be cognitive, it always just amounts to schmoozing behind closed doors. They don’t use any of the techniques in your book, Feeling Good. I’m frustrated!
- In a relationship, should you change yourself in order to get along with someone, or should you wait for someone who will love you as you are?
Dr. Burns will be answering more of your questions in upcoming podcasts, including: How can I help a friend or family member who is struggling with depression or anxiety?
Thanks, Lisa! d

Hi David and Fabrice,
Thanks for the wonderful podcast. I wanted to say that I agree with David’s comments about the need to better train psychotherapists. I am a psychologist in Canada and one of my psychology professors in my graduate program told me “everything useful I learned about doing therapy I learned after leaving school.” I feel very fortunate that early in my training I stumbled into one of David’s workshops and this really helped to ground me in what effective therapy looks like. In many ways, I see psychotherapy as a young field, and I have faith that it will eventually sort itself out. In the meantime, I appreciate greatly your efforts to raise awareness of the gaps in our field and, even more amazingly, your tireless efforts to try and fill them.
With gratitude,
Karin Kramer

I am very grateful for your insight on the subject of therapy and personality disorders (etc.). Frankly, I gave up on professional help for myself. Years ago, I decided to be my own therapist (trial and error). Had to get creative to overcome personal challenges. Hope all is well – Happy Holidays, Season
Thanks! I do understand your frustration with attempts to get effective professional help, and wish you the best. I hope you enjoy my books and podcasts and find them helpful. Sincerely, david burns, md
This podcast was great. It was what I had talked about earlier. My family and myself loves me unconditionally and that settled me right down and put me on a track of goodness. You are right blaming yourself is horrible. Just take responsibility no excuses and learn. It is so humane and the right thing to do. Being hard on yourself is abusive to yourself and nobody does well that well. By the way a Psychiatrist I had seen years ago recommended you to me he said you were good and I agree. You don;t speak in esoteric or superfloruis ideas and you use common sense and language and reason which is why I think you work so well. Another thing I find is that you are so experienced in the field and you get to the chase and explain it all so well.
Thanks Debby, you are always so generous and thoughtful in your comments! David
